Overview
|
Augmented Reality can help eCommerce and local retailers improve shopping experience and significantly reduce returns by providing and engaging "try-before-buy" digital experience. Offering customers visualize products in real time.

Entry point
I have been shopping with my friends at Sam's Club several times. When we were checking at watch and jewelry section, there is not associates to help us with everything. When we want to try on anything, we have to wait and ask some associates to help us. Also, when I order goods online, if it's a wrong color, size and style, I will return. |
Challenge
|
There will be not such problems with in store shopping because people can touch or pick whatever items they want. However, there will be areas where associates are too busy to take care of. For example, jewelry and watch section because the prices of products in these areas are relatively high, they are often locked and members cannot get them freely.
These problems seem trivial, but if using AR technology taken into account, it will help merchants and retailers reduce the return rate, improve customer experience, and increase customer stickiness. |
Research
|
I did a qualitative observation study at the beginning of the project. During my shopping, I noticed that customers visited the jewelry and watch sections about every 15 minutes. But associates were not stationed in the area for the entire time. Electronic areas are generally arranged by brand owners to arrange specialized personnel stationed and answer. Therefore, when customers stop by the area and want to see a piece of jewelry, they need to wait or look for an associate to get help throughout the store. The time to wait is usually less than 5 minutes if the employee is not very busy.
In addition, I interviewed couple colleagues, managers and friends who go shopping at Sam's Club, and they also gave me some ideas and suggestions: 1. Interested in AR technology 2. Supporting local stores and expected to be at home. 3. Hope to reduce return rate |
|
Key Insights
• Improve interaction experience • Reduce return rate • Convenient and easy to use • save time ( offer in-store and offline at home) |
Ideation
|
Considering AR technology can be targeted at different products and different ways (facial detection, object and QR code recognition)
I made a scheme, and to better understand it, I created an information architecture map to help us to understand how the AR products run into the app. |

There are a lot of products can implement AR function, and we can create a complete AR system in later develop. In order to show the effect of AR products, I have set the minimum value products to keep developed. So, I chose to create a short demo which focused on the watch products.

|
What I did later:1. Optimize the 3D model.
2. Set up Unity UI System. 3. Write c# sample code. 4. Link to Vuforia |
